Whether you're planning your very first cruise or your fifth sailing this year (hi, it's me 🙋‍♀️), there are a handful of little things that can make a BIG difference in your vacation.

I spend a lot of time on cruise ships, and I've learned that the best cruise essentials aren't necessarily the ones you'll find on every standard packing list. They're the little things you discover through experience are the products you find yourself reaching for cruise after cruise, long after the novelty of buying all that fun new first cruise gear has worn off.

This blog has always been a favorite, and after years of cruising, I've officially given it a refresh to share my tried-and-true Amazon finds! These are the items that have earned a permanent spot in my suitcase because they genuinely make cruising easier, more comfortable, and a whole lot more enjoyable. Cruise cabins are cleverly designed, but let's be realistic - they're still SMALL. Those little magnetic hooks create extra hanging space almost instantly.

If you've ever opened a cruise cabin closet to find a few mismatched hangers that do NOT align with your lido deck fashion show, your heart may sink a little. 💔

Cruise closets aren't exactly known for their generous storage space, and while you can usually request additional hangers, there's no guarantee you'll get enough... or how long you may have to wait for them. Instead, I prefer bringing my own collapsible travel hangers.

Here's why I love them:

They take up practically no room in my suitcase. In fact, I often carry them in my carry-on backpack! They add virtually no weight, and keeping them handy means I can get started on my unpacking routine as soon as my cabin is ready. I especially love them for dresses, dinner outfits, and clothes that wrinkle easily.

They're also helpful for organizing outfits so I'm not digging through drawers in an already tight space. In my opinion, organization is essential for peace in a cruise cabin.

3. A Crossbody Sling Backpack Will Become Your Cruise Best Friend

I cannot emphasize this enough.

If there's one thing you'll rarely catch me without on a cruise ship, it's a hands-free bag. 😂

Embarkation day? Check.

Exploring the ship? Check.

Heading into port? ABSOLUTELY.

Cruise ships are enormous, and the last thing I want to do is carry a purse everywhere I go. I want my phone, SeaPass card, lip balm, sunglasses, and other little essentials within reach while leaving my hands free for the important things. Like a frozen cocktail. 🍹

But here's something I've learned through experience: the material of your bag MATTERS. I originally fell in love with two nylon belt bags I received as FREE gifts with purchases from Halara. And I still have BOTH of them! One actually became our dedicated traveling first-aid kit, which goes on every cruise with us.

Nylon is lightweight, easy to wipe clean, and dries quickly after the occasional splash. And believe me, I learned that lesson the hard way.

If you've ever walked down a cruise ship hallway lined with what feels like 400 identical doors, you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. Cruise ships can feel like a labyrinth, especially during those first couple of days when you're still figuring out which direction is forward, aft, or somewhere in between.

That's why I LOVE decorating our cabin door with magnets!

Not only are they a fun way to add a little personality to your home away from home, but they also make finding your cabin SO much easier. Instead of squinting at every cabin number as you walk down the hallway, you can spot your decorations and know you've made it home.

And when you're traveling with kids? Even better! It's a simple visual landmark that helps everyone recognize the right door.

There are SO many adorable cruise door magnets available, from tropical designs and nautical themes to personalized family names, holiday decorations, and magnets made specifically for your ship or sailing. You can buy a new set for every cruise (and I often do if we are traveling over a specific holiday), but here's my favorite trick: I store our cruise door magnets flat inside a gallon-size Ziploc bag between sailings. It keeps everything together, protects the decorations from getting bent, and makes them easy to toss right back into my cruise gear box for the next adventure. I've found that with a little care, you can reuse the same set over and over again!

5. A Magnetic Fan Keeps Your Cruise Cabin Cool Without Taking Up Space

A few things about me, now that we're friends...

1. I run HOT. 🥵

2. I cannot sleep without a fan.

Let's talk about something we ALL bring on vacation that we absolutely do NOT want to ruin. OUR PHONES. 

Between taking approximately 8,000 vacation photos, checking the cruise line app, and capturing every adorable thing the kids do, my phone is practically attached to me when we travel.

We've made it to NUMBER TEN, and I'm ending this list with one of the most practical little cruise accessories you can buy: CRUISE LUGGAGE TAG HOLDERS!

If you're new to cruising, here's something you might not know: Before your sailing, your cruise line will generally provide luggage tags that you can print at home. Those tags contain important information that helps the crew deliver your checked luggage to the correct stateroom. These are not typical luggage tags that you put on luggage with your personal information. Instead, these contain information about where your luggage should go after you drop it off.

And what are those tags usually printed on?

REGULAR. OLD. PAPER.
